The Virgin Suicides 12th March 2006, 03:06
Air's debut, Moon Safari, solidified the French duo's position among fickle electronica music fans and earned them critical accolades throughout the press. Yet one of their most important fans turned out to be Sofia Coppola (daughter of Francis Ford), who, inspired by their moody ambiance, asked them to write the soundtrack for her directorial debut. The Virgin Suicides--adapted from the novel by Jeffrey Eugenides about the Lisbon sisters and their quest for answers in a turbulent American adolescence--includes stars such as Kirsten Dunst and Kathleen Turner, and Air make a deeply impressionistic subliminal appearance as well. Gordon Tracks sings the lush and romantic "Playground Love"; the rest is a throbbing score of somber synths and thick washes of modest psychedelic touches that recall the tranquil buzz that comes from too much staring at the lava lamp. The only complaint is that this 13-track album is only 40 minutes long; some of the cuts should have been longer. The meditative quality practically demands it. Download

Pet Shop Boys - Release 8th March 2006, 06:56
The Pet Shop Boys eighth album, though not the rock album it was purported to be, does have enough guitar and percussion to create a sound that's as sumptuous as it is unexpected. Neil Tennant's voice is less nasal than it's often been, and the occasional use of that now ubiquitous vocal-wobbling effect (thanks, cher) actually works very well with his trademarked, introspective-yet-precious lyrics. almost all of the 10 tracks are the kind of inventive pop that many better-selling artists seem incapable of producing these days. It's a return to the form that went slightly iffy somewhere between Behavior and Nightlife, and deserves to catapult Pet Shop Boys back to the top of the album charts for a very long time.

Will & Grace Season1 5th March 2006, 15:42
Will: Jack, I'm trying to do my job. Yeah, now that's the first time I've ever said 'Jack' and 'job' in a sentence without 'needs to get a' in between. I'm sorry. Grace is upset with her bathroom.
Jack: Yeah, cause it's too small for her. It's too small for Malibu Barbie. Will, why don't you just share your bathroom. Ya know, I think that's the first time I've said 'Will' and 'share' in a sentence without 'doesn't know how to' in between

Norah Jones - Come Away with Me 5th March 2006, 10:41
It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more.Download

A Beautiful World 5th March 2006, 10:34
Comparisons generally stink, but sometimes they're so obvious that they're inevitable. So it is with L.A. native and blue-eyed soul man Robin Thicke. Equal parts Remy Shand and Jamiroquai--though funkier than the former and less knuckleheaded than the latter--Thick's Cherry Blue Skies staggers through the speakers with moxie to spare. Opening track "Oh Shooter"--which finds Thicke
drawling lazily while tires screech in the background--is a bait-and-switch for what's to come. By "Sugar Mama," Thicke is outfitted in
the proverbial white suit and fedora, slinking around the edges of the groove and wailing in a falsetto like some funk-soul cat from the '70s. Levity plays an essential role in the formula, too; "Make a Baby" is as silly a love song as its title suggests, and "When I Get You Alone" steals wholesale from Walter Murphy's disco-era novelty hit, "A Fifth of Beethoven." But the dance floor is only one destination in Thicke's view. Earnest ballads also appear (notably, the sweetly sentimental, minor-chord lament "The Stupid Things"), and one is again inclined toward another comparison, this time to Stevie Wonder. Funky, jazzy soul-pop, with a touch of salsa in "Vengas Con Migo"; that's as accomplished as it is welcoming
